Kai-Tak, the 13th tropical storm of the year, is approaching southern China. Guangdong Meteorological Office has issued a level 3 warning.

Kai-Tak, moving northwest at a speed of 15 to 20 km per hour, is predicted to hit the southern regions of Taiwan between Wednesday night and Thursday evening, before moving toward the coastal areas of the provinces of Guangdong and Fujian.

It’s expected the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong will see rainfall of 100 to 250 millimetres. Meteorologists have advised coastal authorities to recall ships, reinforce outdoor structures, and evacuate workers from offshore oil platforms in anticipation of the storm.

Lu Shan, chief forcaster at Guangdong Meteorological Center, said, "The tropical storm is becoming more powerful as it moves towards the South China Sea. We expect the storm to increase in severity to typhoon level. Guangdong Province will witness heavy rainfall and thunder."
