Japan arrests 14 Chinese activists on Diaoyu Islands issue

Chinese activsts on board a Hong Kong fishing vessel have landed on the Diaoyu Islands and planted a Chinese national flag. Latest reports from Japan say all 14 activists onboard the vessel were arrested by the Japanese police. China’s Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying has summoned Japanese ambassador in China Uichiro Niwa to lodge a solemn representation. She reasserted China’s lawful claim over Diaoyu Islands.

Chinese patriotic activities of landing on the Diaoyu Islands was confronted by Japanese coast guards.

They first arrested five Chinese activists who landed on the islands earlier in the day. Then all the fourteen activists were arrested later.

According to the Japanese police in Okinawa, the arrested activists will be transferred to Naha, the capital of Okinawa.

The 14 activists were on a Hong Kong fishing vessel to assert China’s claim to the Diaoyu Islands. The vessel departed from Hong Kong on Sunday.

The voyage is a response to some Japanese lawmakers’ plans to land on the Diaoyu Islands this weekend.

A previous attempt had been made by Hong Kong activists to sail to the Diaoyu Islands back in 2006.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said China’s stance on Diaoyu Island is clear and firm.

China has expressed serious concerns and demanded the Japanese side not to do anything to endanger the safety of persons or property of the group.
