Waste recycling in Guiyang

08-16-2012 14:19 BJT

In Southwest China’s Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou Province, waste is normally disposed of in landfills. But one man has started his own company, which collects rubbish for recycling. Lan Yajun has worked with waste disposal for more than five years. He set up his own recycling company in 2011 in Guiyang. Since June, his company has been trying to sort and recycle waste for the Zhenhua community in Guiyang, in a commercially viable way.

Lan Yajun, General Manager, Gao Yuan Company said, "We provide residents with three separate bags to sort the rubbish into, such as kitchen waste, like leftovers; recyclable garbage, like bottles, and others things, like batteries.”

Residents are now separating their rubbish for recycling purposes. Those who do a good job are even given a small financial incentive every month.

Yang Lan, Zhenhua Community Resident said, “I think recycling is a very good idea. It’s good for the environment and public health.”

Through separating the rubbish, about 13 percent of waste can be processed for re-use. The vast majority of what’s thrown away is kitchen waste, which can be turned into a kind of organic fertilizer, and then used to plant vegetables.

Jiang Ping, Deputy DIR. General, Guizhou Environmental Protection Bureau said ”The costs of running a recycling business can be considerable. Without government assistance, I think it will be quite hard for a company like this to survive and expand.”

Experts say having an environmentally sustainable rubbish disposal system means the whole community has to be involved - government, local residents and enterprises. Lan Yajun’s company has set a good example in waste recycling, but more cooperation with the local government and residents is needed in order to develop a more efficient and viable service.
