South Korea and the United States have launched a joint exercise aimed at enhancing defense readiness.

The computer-assisted simulation exercise is dubbed Ulchi Freedom Guardian. It will mobilize some 56,000 South Korean troops and 30,000 U.S. forces. But the kind of soldiers and weaponry equipment has not been disclosed.

Commander of the U.S. forces, General James Thurman, says Ulchi Freedom Guardian is a key exercise in strengthening the readiness of South Korean and US forces. He adds it’s based on realistic scenarios. The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s army has been informed of the launch of the annual drill and its non- provocative nature.

Representatives from Switzerland, China and other nations selected by the United Nations will supervise the exercise. The drill is scheduled to end on August 31st.
