Two Russian cosmonauts at the International Space Station are making a six and a half hour spacewalk to carry out a number of maintenance tasks.

The two, Gennady Padalka and Yuri Malenchenko will wear Russian-made sophisticated spacesuits equipped with digital displays that are designed to instruct the spacemen in any emergency situation.

They will focus primarily on installing new micrometeoroid debris shields over parts of the Russian Zvezda service module, and moving a hand-operated crane from the station’s Pirs docking module to the outpost’s Zarya control module. Today’s spacewalk is the first in Expedition 32.

Two other astronauts from the station’s six-person crew will carry out a separate spacewalk for NASA on August the 30th.
