Syrian army takes control of Damascus suburb

In Syria, Fighting in the country continued in a number of battered areas on Friday, gaining momentum in areas around the capital Damascus. Opposition sources said Syrian troops backed by tanks entered the center of Daraya, a town on the southwest edge of Damascus, on Friday after three days of heavy ground and helicopter bombardment.

Hundreds of troops and dozens of tanks and armoured vehicles have been seen on al-Thawra street in central Daraya and activists in Damascus say government forces have taken control of the suburb as a core group of rebel fighters pulled out.

Activists say 19 people have killed so far in Daryya, but that claim has not been verified.

Intense shelling was also reported from Damascus suburb of Zabadani on Friday.

Elsewhere in Idlib province, residents of a village could be seen digging frantically through the rubble of destroyed buildings.

Activists claim that the buildings were flattened by airstrikes and the villagers are searching for the bodies of residents believed to have been killed in the attacks.

Meanwhile,the state-run news agency SANA said the security forces clashed with some armed "terrorists" in Sayyed Ali area in Aleppo, killing nine of them.

Residents say combat jets and helicopter gunships have struck rebel-held districts of Aleppo over night.

According to a U.N. estimate, over 18,000 people have been killed in the fighting in Syria since March 2011.
