The 45-year-old’s body was brought to Turkey on Tuesday after she was fatally wounded in the crossfire between rebels and government forces in the besieged northwestern Syrian city of Aleppo. Yamamoto and her colleague Kazukata Sato were travelling with the Free Syrian Army in Aleppo.

Yamamoto was a veteran reporter working for The Japan Press. She was the fifth foreign journalist to be killed in Syria since the start of the war. A sixth journalist died from a severe asthma attack during an undercover reporting trip.
