Japan’s lower house has adopted a resolution, saying the Diaoyu Islands are Japan’s territory. It also accused the landing by Chinese activists aboard a Hong Kong ship at the islands last week.

The resolution notes Japan and China are important partners with shared interests. It calls on the two sides to deepen ties to promote regional and international peace, stability and prosperity.

In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei says since the Japanese side is willing to deepen bilateral relations, then it should take practical action to that end. Hong Lei called Japan’s attempt to strengthen its position on the Diaoyu Islands through the resolution "illegal and futile". He said it cannot change the fact that the Diaoyu Islands belong to China since ancient times.
