The United Nations nuclear watchdog and Iran failed to come to an agreement on Friday. The talk aimed at resolving deepening concern about suspected nuclear weapons research by Tehran.

This was the first since previous discussions ended in failure in June. The meeting took place after an upsurge in rhetoric from Israeli politicians this month - suggesting that Israel might attack Iran ahead of the U.S. presidential election in November. Diplomatic sources said on Thursday that Iran had installed many more uranium enrichment machines in an underground bunker.

Iran denies allegations it is seeking a nuclear weapons capabilities. But its refusal to curb its nuclear enrichment programme has prompted tough Western sanctions. Iran’s ambassador to the IAEA, Ali Asghar Soltanieh, said that it had made "undoubtedly some progress."

Herman Nackaerts, Head of IAEA Delegation, said, "Discussions today were intensive but important differences remained between Iran and the Agency that prevented an agreement on this structured approach paper. The team will now inform the director general and in a few days he will report to the board. At the moment we have no plans for another meeting."

Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran's envoy to IAEA, said, "We have to say that undoubtedly some progress in removing some ambiguities and differences has been made. Still, as it was said, there are differences because it is a very complex issue, and issues related to national security of a member state are very delicate matters. But I have to say that we are moving forward."
