24 killed in large explosion at Venezuelan oil refinery

A large gas explosion has shaken Venezuela’s biggest refinery, killing at least 24 people, including a 10 year old child. More than 60 other people have been injured.

Officials said the blast was caused by a gas leak and that it had damaged nearby homes along with the refinery complex. Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez was on the scene and said the blast was of a significant magnitude in a way that it caused damage to the infrastructure and homes nearby, as well as the command of the national guard that was serving the refinery.

He also said the number of injured are still being determined. Emergency workers were at the scene. Officials said the situation was under control several hours after the explosion.
