The southern African country is just hours away from holding its third national elections since independence from Portugal in 1975. Friday’s elections are also the second since the end of a 27-year civil war a decade ago.

Long-serving President Jose Eduardo dos Santos is widely expected to win a new five-year term in office after nearly 33 years at the helm of Africa’s second-biggest oil producer. Dos Santos holds political dominance and has carefully cultivated an official image as guarantor of Angola’s peace and rebuilding.

The civil war within Angola, which turned into one of the longest Cold War conflicts, resulted in half a million dead and hundreds of thousands of injuries. The conflict also destroyed much of the country’s infrastructure. But backed by an oil output boom, it has seen rapid growth in recent years. Between 2002 and 2008 , the economy expanded by an average of 15 percent per year.
