About 270 South African miners have been reportedly charged with the murder of 34 of their striking colleagues shot dead by police. They were previously arrested during recent protests at the Marikana platinum mine.

The decision to charge the miners comes under an arcane Roman-Dutch "common purpose" law. It could find them responsible because they were in a crowd which confronted police. Many suggest the government is attempting to shift the blame for the killings.

Former African National Congress Youth League President, Julius Malema, told supporters outside the courthouse that the charges were "madness." The families of those detained are calling for their release. The police killings have shocked the nation and damaged the reputation of President Jacob Zuma and his governing ANC party.
