The US National Hurricane Center says Isaac has been downgraded from a tropical storm to a tropical depression. Tens of thousands of people have been forced to evacuate their homes in Louisiana and Mississippi.

The storm has left a soggy mess across a widespread area along the Gulf Coast. It could bring heavy rain and flooding to the central US in the next few days. Louisiana’s Governor says a controlled release of water has begun at a dam compromised by Isaac.

Meanwhile, the hurricane center says Tropical Storm Leslie has formed in the Atlantic. It is located about 1,800 kilometres east of the Windward Islands. The storm is packing winds of 65 kilometres per hour and is moving west. It is likely to become a hurricane on Saturday but is not expected to threaten the US mainland.
