Hillary Clinton begins Asia trip in South Pacific

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will try to reassert American interests in the Asia-Pacific region as she kicks off a six-nation trip to the region.

Clinton left Washington on Thursday. Her 11-day tour begins in the remote Cook Islands. On the main island of Rarotonga, she will attend an annual gathering of officials from Australia, New Zealand and the tiny nations scattered across the Pacific Ocean.

Following the Post Forum Dialogue of the Pacific Islands Forum, she will travel to Jakarta, Indonesia. Her other destinations include China, Timor-Leste, Brunei, and Russia. She will represent the U.S. at a summit of leaders from Pacific Rim countries in Vladivostok, Russia. The APEC summit is expected to centre on trade and food security.
