French police remain on high alert in Paris, a day after authorities banned demonstrations against a U.S-made anti-Islam film and cartoons published by a satirical weekly denigrating Islam’s Prophet Mohammad.

olice have been patrolling the streets near the United States embassy at the Place de la Concorde. Interior Minister, Manuel Valls, says prefects have orders to prohibit protests and to crack down if the ban is challenged.

Drawings, featuring a naked Prophet Muhammad, appearing in the French satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo, have stoked the uproar over the U.S made anti-Islam film, which has provoked violent protests in several Muslim countries.

But France’s Muslim population appears to have shrugged off the controversy, as Imams at mosques around the country have denounced the pictures but urged their followers to remain calm. Friday prayers at mosques in France went ahead without any major incident.
