Three more US tilt-rotor Ospreys have arrived at an air base in Japan’s southernmost prefecture of Okinawa, bringing the total number of the controversial transport aircraft deployed there to nine.

The three MV-22 Osprey aircraft were transferred to the US Marine Corps’ Futenma Air Station from the Iwakuni Air Station in Yamaguchi Prefecture in western Japan. The first six Ospreys were deployed on the island on Monday. The nine are part of 12 Ospreys which had been temporarily stationed at the Iwakuni base since July for test flights.

The US military plans to deploy several Ospreys for low-altitude flight training in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu on monthly basis. On Wednesday, locals in Okinawa are expected to gather for an assembly at city hall to voice their opposition against the deployment of Ospreys on the island.
