European Commission President Barroso calls on the more prosperous EU member states to support the poorer regions at the Friends of Cohesion summit in Bratislava.

Jose Manuel Barroso, president of European Commission, said, "The more prosperous countries, the net contributors, should agree to continue with an ambitious cohesion policy supporting the less prosperous regions of Europe. They should show their determination because it is a contribution for growth all over Europe and it is a contribution to reducing balances. This is the part of the deal that we are asking to net contributors to make."

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and 15 other senior EU officials are gathering for the meeting of the informal group, Friends of Cohesion. The meeting is aimed at reaching an effective position not to decrease the amount of funds for the cohesion policy aimed at eliminating regional disparities.

Croatia attends the meeting as an acceding country. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is hosting the summit at Bratislava castle, which is a follow-up to a previous meeting in Bucharest in June. European Parliament President Martin Schulz and EU Budget Commissioner Janusz Lewandowski are also taking part in the meeting.
