Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has stressed support to the efforts of the UN-Arab League representative Lakhdar Brahimi, adding that his country is open to all sincere efforts to find a political solution to the crisis.

He made the remarks when meeting with Brahimi on Sunday in Damascus. During the meeting, they discussed a temporary ceasefire during the Islamic Eid al-Adha holiday.

Brahimi was escorted to the talks with Assad by Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad. The envoy has appealed for a truce between Assad’s forces and rebels for the four-day Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which begins October 26th.

Brahimi arrived in Damascus on Friday after a tour of Middle East capitals to drum up support for the cease-fire. A range of countries including Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Germany have thrown their support behind the idea.

While neither the Syrian government nor the rebels have signed on, Brahimi told reporters that leaders of the opposition within and outside Syria had "responded positively" to the plan on the condition that "the Syrian government committed to it".
