Early and unusually heavy snowfall has obstructed traffic and caused a number of accidents in eastern Germany. Similar conditions have been reported in the federal state of Hesse as well as areas of northern Germany.
Highway maintenance crews are busy clearing roads and cutting down tree branches bending under the weight of snow. 20 centimetres of snow has been measured in Saxony, while the Ore Mountain area of Thuringia saw a covering of up to 18 centimetres.
