With barely a few hours left before cyclone Nilam hits India’s east coast, authorities have deployed relief and rescue teams across the country’s southern states to combat the expected destruction.

The Indian Meteorological Department says "Nilam" is expected to move north-northwest and cross the coast near Chennai by Wednesday evening. Fishermen have been asked to stay ashore and school children have been told to stay at home. Administrative officials have identified the vulnerable areas that are likely to be worst affected from the catastrophe and have already deployed rescue teams.

Earlier Tuesday, a cyclone alert was issued in coastal parts of India’s southern states as the deep depression intensified into a cyclonic storm.
