President Barack Obama has told New Jersey residents, devastated by Superstorm Sandy, that the federal government will be there for the long haul.

Obama and Republican Governor Chris Christie put aside partisan differences to inspect the coastal devastation and oversee relief efforts. Obama told people at an emergency shelter that one of his top priorities is getting power back on. In New Jersey, half of all businesses and homes are still without power and more than 80 percent of gas stations are unable to sell fuel.

The president has put his campaign on hold for a third day ahead of Tuesday’s election, as he directs the federal response to the storm. Republican Governor Christie has lavishly praised the Democratic president for his leadership throughout the crisis.
