ASEM Summit to open in Laos

European and Asian leaders will gather in Vientiane, Laos on Monday, for a two-day summit to discuss a host of global challenges.

Under the theme "Friends for Peace, Partners for Prosperity", the Ninth Asia-Europe Meeting Summit will concentrate on economic and security issues, amid the wobbling global economy. Leaders will look to strengthen trade and investment ties between the two regions, and discuss how Asian economies can shore up a faltering Europe.

Among the leaders attending are China’s Premier Wen Jiabao, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, French President Francois Hollande, Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti and Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

The 9th ASEM summit will also see the addition of three more members; Switzerland, Bangladesh and Norway.
