Cairo talks fail to produce new Syria plan

11-05-2012 17:08 BJT

A meeting between peace ambassador Lakdhar Brahimi, Russia’s foreign minister and the head of the Arab League has failed to produce an agreement over how to solve the Syrian crisis.

Plans including the UN-supported four-day cease-fire that was meant to coincide with the major Muslim holiday of Eid last week also failed, leaving the international community at a loss for ways to end the war.

According to the Geneva agreement reached by world powers in June, a transitional government in Syria must be formed on the basis of a mutual agreement between the government and the opposition. Brahimi says the situation in the country is likely to deteriorate further unless a political resolution is found soon.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused countries that only work with the Syrian opposition of not sticking to the Geneva agreement.
