Japan’s Prime Minister has said that his ruling party will add the country’s participation in the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade talks in its manifesto for the next general election.

Yoshihiko Noda made the statement in Fukuoka where he was on an inspection tour. However, Noda said his party has not come up with any specifics about an announcement of Japan’s participation in the US-led trade negotiations.

The Japanese leader is facing staunch opposition to joining the TPP talks from the country’s agricultural sector, which fear an influx of cheaper produce from overseas under lowered tariffs.

Meanwhile, Japan’s main opposition Liberal Democratic Party is cautious about allowing the country to join the TPP negotiations.
