Grassroots delegates to the Party Congress say they’re very impressed with the General Secreatary Hu Jintao’s report. They pay particular attention to the report’s emphasis on developing a balanced and sustainable economy, and the Party’s commitment to the people.

A party delegate, and city cleaner. 39-year-old Ren Xiaoyun clears tons of residential garbage every day, but not this week.

As the only Party delegate from the capital sanitation sector, Ren is honored and inspired to be part of China’s biggest political event.

He says, "General Secretary Hu Jintao’s report has put forward the concept of building a "Beautiful China". This impressed me the most. As a sanitation worker, I work to improve the environment. I think a sound living and working environment matters to all."

The emphasis on ecological protection also got Liu Meilian thinking. For more than ten years, the bus driver has provided a safe, clean, and convenient ride. This includes countless hours of cleaning her vehicle. And she says even more must be done.

She says, "In terms of improve people’s well-being, I think we should make the public transportation more convenient for passengers. I’ve driven four different models of buses during the past ten years. The latest has automatic transmission, we no longer need to shift gears manually, and carbon emission is low."

Liu Hong is a welder at the Capital Steel Group. She’s calling for a better combination of practical and theoretical instruction.

She says, "On education and employment, I think the government should further promote vocational education, especially for skilled workers like me, to continue seeking higher education."

For many of the grassroots delegates, it’s their first time to be elected for the Party Congress.

They say they are honored, and also feel the repsonsibility to get things moving from the bottom up.
