NATO says it has picked three sites in southern Turkey to base its batteries of Patriot surface-to-air missiles. The US-led bloc added that the move aims to boost Turkey’s air defenses against possible violence spilling over from Syria.

Germany, the Netherlands and the US will provide two batteries each of an advanced version of the Patriot that is optimized to shoot down incoming missiles. More than 1-thousand troops from the three nations will service the deployment.

NATO reiterated in a statement on Saturday that the missiles will be purely defensive and will not support a no-fly zone inside Syria. NATO approved Turkey’s request for the air defense system earlier this month.
