Two Swiss trains have collided near the German border, injuring 17 people. None were in serious condition.

Police say the two trains crashed outside the Neuhausen station in northern Switzerland, near the German border on Thursday. A total of 280 passengers were on the trains when the accidents occurred. The line was closed immediately.

And evacuated passengers were carried away by buses. Investigations have looked for possible evidence of signal malfunction and mechanical defects as a reason.

Swiss trains have a reputation for punctuality and safety, and fatal train accidents are rare. The last major accident was in 2010. One passenger was killed and 42 injured.

A demolished and derailed RE 440 train is pictured after a train crash in the northern Swiss
town of Neuhausen am Rheinfall.
