03-14-2013 12:01 BJT Special Report: China’s Leaders |
Special Report: 2013 NPC & CPPCC Sessions |

General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, Xi Jinping, has been elected the President of the People’s Republic of China. Xi has been dubbed a man of the people, and a statesman with a vision.

From rural localities to the central leadership, serving the people has weighed most in Xi’s political career. He values innovation when it comes to economic growth, and has shown a more personable side when it comes to diplomacy and meeting foreign officials.

Xi Jinping was born in June 1953. He is an ethnic Han from Fuping, Shaanxi Province. He entered the workforce in January 1969 and joined the CPC in January 1974.

Xi Jinping graduated from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Tsinghua University. He has an in-service postgraduate education, and holds a doctorate degree in Law.

He is currently general secretary of the CPC central Committee, chairman of the CPC central Military Commission, and now president of the People’s Republic of China.

Xi has shown himself to be a leader with foresight. Earlier when he worked in Zhengding, Hebei province, he boosted local economic growth by expanding business opportunities in the county’s film and tourism industries. His efforts helped bring in 1.3 million tourists to the county annually.

While he worked in Fujian province as the governor, Xi was the first in the country to launch a campaign to crack down on food contamination.

In 1999, Xi first put forward the idea of improving IT infrastructure and introducing the latest technology to the public. By 2010, Fujian was the first province in China to have all its hospitals linked by computer networks, allowing the sharing of digital medical records.

After transferring to Zhejiang Province in 2002, Xi initiated local industrial restructuring, by supporting start-ups in the private sector and enterprises looking to expand overseas. By 2006, thanks to his efforts, Zhejiang ranked fourth when it came to sustainable development, just under Shanghai, Beijing, and Tianjin.

After serving as party chief of Shanghai in 2007, Xi was elevated to the central leadership. While working in the financial hub, Xi left his mark by promoting the economic integration of the Yangtze River Delta, which enhanced Shanghai’s leading role in the region.

Xi has also shown pragmatism when it comes to international affairs, displaying an easy-going personality in public while meeting with foreign leading officials. Many are expecting his amicable image to help the world better understand China.

During a visit to the US in 2012, Xi met with some old friends for tea in a Iowa farm community. Most of them were friends Xi had made 27 years ago during a visit to Iowa as a member of an agricultural research delegation.

Also in 2012, Xi Jinping showed off his athletic skills by kicking a football in Dublin’s Croke Park as he visited the headquarters of the Gaelic Athletic Association in Ireland. An overseas media outlet remarked that Xi succeeded in not only demonstrating his personality, but also the charm of China’s economic development and social progress.

Xi entered China’s central leadership in 2007, being elected a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau, the Secretariat of CPC Central Committee, and president of the Central Party School. In 2008, Xi was elected vice president of the People’s Republic of China. And 2 years later, he was appointed Vice-Chairman of CPC and PRC Central Military Commission. In 2012, Xi was elected General Secretary of the CPC central committee, and Chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission.
