The 11th International Defense Industry Fair in Istanbul, Turkey is seeing increased participation from Chinese companies this time round. And the reasons have all to do with not just the changing geo-political realities of the world, but also the increased closeness of ties between Turkey and China.

2013 marks the first time the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Turkey has taken interest in the defense industry. As the Turkish Culture Year is celebrated in China this year, Attache at the Embassy, Zhao Liang emphasizes relations between the two countries are at a peak in many aspects.

Zhao Liang, Attache, Chinese Embassy in Turkey, said, "We have a lot of economic connections between Turkey and China and now it’s peaking. Chinese companies helped build the railway, from Ankara to Istanbul. We have built the power plant, we have a lot of cooperation with the Turkish economy. I think defense industry is also a part of this."

Chinese companies such as the "China Electronics Technology Group" and Keyoptics were among the participants in the defense fair, in search of new international clients.

The national China Precision Machinery Import and Export Corporation have been participating in the international defense fair over the last couple of years. Vice President Dang, explains why.

Nan Dang, Vice President, China Precision Machinery Import & Export Corp., said, "In terms of its geographic location, Turkey is very important. It creates a bridge between Europe and Asia. And the Turkish market is very important in the world. Turkey, in the past, especially in the past 5 years is booming, like China. It has grown rapidly, so we would like to share our defense technology with our local industry. That’s why we have entered this market."

China, definitely seems to have chosen the right strategy as the latest report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute suggests it has become the worlds’ fifth largest arms exporter, with Pakistan topping the list of clients.

With two national and four private companies present, Chinese companies at the International Defense Fair in Istanbul are hopeful of expanding their businesses globally.
