President Xi Jinping tours quake-hit Lushan County

Special Report: 7.0 earthquake hits Lushan County, Sichuan Province |

President Xi Jinping has asked local governments in southwest China’s Sichuan Province, which was hit by a strong earthquake last month, to shift their focus to encouraging residents to move back to the once affected areas.

During a three-day visit to hard-hit Lushan County that ended on Thursday, Xi urged local governments to carefully evaluate the damage and draft a plan to encourage residents to return based on local conditions.

Xi said the program should not only consider local economic and social conditions, but also provide a chance for quake-hit areas to upgrade and allow for sustainable growth.

Schooling in the quake-hit zone was one particular concern for President Xi. He stressed that efforts should be made to get schools up and running again and provide psychological counselling.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit Lushan on April 20, killing at least 196 people.
