Liu Yang attends event to mark 50 years of women in space

It has been fifty years since the world’s very first female astronaut took off into space.

Retired former Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova went on a historical space flight on June 16th, 1963 and orbited the earth 48 times. The United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space is celebrating 50 years of women in space with a series of events. The committee is using this unique opportunity to mark women’s contribution to space exploration, and view the advancement in space science from a women’s perspective.

Female pioneers in space endeavours are invited to the event in Vienna from all over the world. Among them is China’s first female astronaut Liu Yang. She participated in the opening ceremony on Wednesday and expressed her sincere congratulations to her successor. China’s second female astronaut Wang Yaping is currently on the Shenzhou-10 spaceship fulfilling the manned space mission.

"Yaping, I want to wholeheartedly congratulate you on achieving your space dream with the Shenzhou-ten mission. Although I cannot go on the trip with you, my heart is flying with you. I believe you will give an outstanding performance and fulfil the mission successfully," said Liu Yang, China’s First Female Astronaut.

Among them is China’s first female astronaut Liu Yang. She participated in the opening
ceremony on Wednesday and expressed her sincere congratulations to her successor.
