The Tiangong-1 station has been in space for nearly two years, laying the groundwork for a future space lab.

The target orbiter and space module was shot into space from the Jiuquan launch centre on September 29, 2011. Shenzhou 8 successfully docked with the station on November 8th, 2011 which was the beginning of a series of docking tests. China has become the third country in the world to manage docking technology. Shenzhou 9 docked with Tiangong-1 twice in June last year, both automatically and manually. It was China’s first time to dock during a manned space mission, marking a significant milestone in the country’s space project.

Tiangong-1 has maintained in its orbit for various space science experiments after Shenzhou 9 returned to earth.
