Tibetans gear up to celebrate Shoton Festival

What started as a religious event has developed into a region-wide grand celebration of Tibetan culture. The week-long Shoton Festival is to open in the Tibetan Autonomous Region on August 6th this year.

Held every June 30th on the Tibetan calendar, the Shoton Festival brings out the best in Tibetan culture.

In Tibet, the Shoton Festival is mainly a day to feast on yogurt. But the festival is more famous for the giant displays of Buddha Tangkas and Tibetan opera shows.

Its traditional features is to be borne out in nine main activities this year.

Shi Benlin, Vice Mayor of Lhasa, said, "The theme this year is ’Beautiful Homeland, Happy Lhasa’. In particular we will have a theme song composition contest, forums to discuss protection of Tibetan opera, Tibetan cuisine; exhibitions of Tangka and photography and a cycling event."

The festival is celebrated across the region but Lhasa will nevertheless remain the main ground for this thousand-year-old festival.

The city was recently awarded the title of the 2012 World Festival and Event City by the US-based International Festival and Event Association.

The award recognizes the best in community leadership, festivals and event partnership around the world.

An award was presented at a press conference to the vice mayor of Lhasa in honor of the moment.
