According to the French Interior Ministry, nine are in a critical condition. The train -- a regional service that travels more slowly than France’s TGV expresses -- veered off the track as it pulled into the station at the town of Bretigny-sur-Oise, 26 kilometers south of Paris.

The crash is the deadliest in France in years, and French President Francois Hollande abandoned plans in the capital to visit the scene, where he spoke with several of the injured passengers gathered around emergency medical tents set up nearby.
