Spanish police have announced that they’ve detained the driver of the train that crashed in northwestern Spain.

The driver was officially detained in the hospital where he was recovering from his injuries but cannot yet testify due to his medical condition. Local police say the driver will be questioned as "a suspect in the crime."

Meanwhile, the death toll in the derailment has been lowered from 80 to 78. Forensic scientists are still working to identify several of the bodies and the final death toll will only be confirmed once the investigation has been completed. The train derailed on the eve of Santiago de Compostela’s main annual festival where thousands of Christian pilgrims were expected to flock to the city in honor of St. James.
