China presents E. China Sea continental shelf data to UN

08-17-2013 06:31 BJT Special Report: Diaoyu Islands: China’s Inherent Territory |

Chinese officials have made a presentation to the UN on its East China Sea continental shelf, to back up China’s sovereignty claim on the Diaoyu Islands.

In a submission to the UN’s "Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf", given on Wednesday, China said its continental shelf naturally extends to the Okinawa Trough, and beyond 200 nautical miles from the baseline used as a starting point to measure China’s maritime territory.

The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea calls for evidence to be provided by a country if its continental shelf extends more than 200 nautical miles from the width-measuring baseline. China says it has indisputable sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands.
