The Philippine Coast Guard reports at least 17 people have been killed and hundreds rescued after a ferry sank following a collision with a cargo vessel in the central port of Cebu.

Survivors of the passenger vessel MV St Thomas Aquinas that sank after colliding with a cargo
ship, are ferried to a hospital in Talisay, Cebu in central Philippines on August 17, 2013.

The accident happened on Friday night when a ferry, leaving Cebu port for Manila, collided with a cargo ship approaching the pier. There were reportedly nearly 700 passengers on the ferry and 18 crew on board the other ship.

The Philippine Coast Guard has been conducting rescue operations, after hundreds of passengers from the ferry jumped into the water. The coast guard says it doesn’t know if there are still people missing, and the search for survivors will continue.
