6.2-magnitude quake shakes Acapulco, Mexico

08-22-2013 07:17 BJT

A moderately strong earthquake has struck near Mexico’s Pacific coast resort of Acapulco, causing cracks in some buildings and knocking bricks and plaster off other structures.

Tourists were also affected with many rushing out of their hotels onto the street until the tremor had passed. There were no reports of injuries. The US Geological Survey says the quake had a magnitude of 6.2. Meanwhile, 280 kilometres to the north, buildings swayed in Mexico city.

Some people evacuated office buildings as an earthquake alarm sounded. Mexico City is particularly vulnerable even to distant earthquakes because much of it is built on top of the muddy sediments of drained lake beds.

The 8.1-magnitude quake in 1985 that killed at least 6,000 people and destroyed many buildings in the capital was centred 400 kilometres away on the Pacific coast.
