Valentina Sinis & Li Yang: Cherish every moment

08-30-2013 10:39 BJT Special Report: Chinese Dream |

Nine years ago, when Valentina Sinis moved to Beijing for a one-month Mandarin study program, she fell in love with the city. Soon after, she quit her job in Italy to move to China. What she didn’t realize at the time is that she would go on to meet the love of her life, tattoo artist Li Yang, one night while going out with friends.

Despite having to communicate using only basic Chinese at first, Yang said being with Valentina just felt right. “We found out we both shared the same hobbies ―travelling, a lot of the same music, going to concerts,” he said. “Our lifestyles were very similar, and of course, we both liked tattoos. So we both felt, we walk to the same beat, why not be together?”

The couple said their shared love for music and art, as well as their individual passions, has helped their relationship to thrive and mitigate cultural differences. “As we started to communicate more, I tried to learn as much as I could about her culture, and as time went on our cultures started to mix together,” Yang said.

After travelling to Naples together to meet Valentina’s family, the couple married in Valentina’s native Sardinia in 2008.  Since then, in addition to her day job in Beijing as a fashion marketing teacher, Valentina has served as Yang’s manager in semiannual trips to tattoo conventions in Europe, helping him to gain exposure within the international tattoo community.

"My Chinese Dream is Yang, my Chinese husband,” Valentina offered enthusiastically, but added, “China has given me a lot of opportunity, and I’m very grateful for that."
