forces at Zamboanga City in the southern Philippines.

The rebels forced their way into the city centre early on Monday. Six people including four civilians have been killed and 24 others have been wounded in the clashes.

The gunmen belong to the Moro National Liberation Front. The group entered into a peace agreement with government in 1996. They took up arms again five years later, claiming the government did not fully implement the deal.

Senior members within the group say this latest move is aimed at establishing an independent nation instead of an autonomous government.
