Divers continue to recover bodies from wreckage

10-05-2013 08:23 BJT

Divers are continuing to search for bodies from the ship wreck off the Italian island of Lampedusa off Sicily. Rescue teams have so far recovered more than one hundred bodies. Local divers and fishermen have been assisting the coast guard in the search and rescue operation.

"From a professional point of view we do what is our duty, but when you see bodies stuck and not moving underwater, both on the sand, on the seabed and on the deck of the ship, it is very unpleasant." Rocco Canella, Diver said.

"We rescued naked guys, dirty from fuel, they had death in their eyes, it was an ugly and scary situation. I will never forget it. Even though I am 64 and I have seen a lot, this touched me a lot." Vito Firini, Local Fisherman said.

Divers discovered the wreckage on the sea floor on Thursday, 40 metres below the surface. Officials say 155 people have been rescued and an estimated 250 are still missing. The search effort is continuing.

The Italian government has declared Friday a day of mourning for the victims. Flags outside the Italian Presidential Palace and Parliament building in Rome were lowered as a sign of respect.

The Senate committee delayed proceedings to discuss the expulsion of Silvio Berlusconi from Parliament to pay tribute to the dead. The boat was believed to be carrying more than 500 people, mostly migrants from Africa. The government has asked the EU to help stem the influx of migrants.
