Crossover: India to induct Russian aircraft carrier Saturday

11-15-2013 15:29 BJT

India’s second aircraft carrier, an upgraded and retrofitted former Soviet navy vessel, will be handed over to the Indian navy by Russia on Saturday. The 45,500-ton vessel, known as Vikramaditya, cost India 2.3 billion US dollars. For more analysis on this, we are joined on the line by Chitrapu Uday Bhaskar, one of India’s leading experts on security and strategic affairs who is in New Delhi.

Q1. Tell us more about the equipment on the aircraft carrier and how will it improve India’s combat ability at sea?

Q2. In August, India launched its first indigenously developed aircraft carrier. Now Vikramaditya will be India’s second aircraft carrier. It seems that India is expanding its naval presence in the Indian Ocean quickly. Can you please tell us more about India’s strategic plan for its maritime power?
