Chinese soldiers are taking part in humanitarian assistance drills in Hawaii, with their US counterparts. It’s the first time China has sent troops to the US for a joint drill.

On the final day of the drill, the troops focused on providing emergency aid and relief operations in a third country - hit by a devastating typhoon.

After receiving a request for aid, the People’s Liberation Army sent a rescue team of 26 soldiers. And the US Army Pacific Command sent a second team of 47 troops.

The two teams, armed with rescue equipment, carried out missions, such as searching for survivors, rescuing people from narrow passages and providing medical aid at a high-altitude.

After the exercise, troops discussed and reviewed the drill. China is also set to take part next year in the Pacific Rim military drill off the Hawaiian coast. While China has observed this drill before, 2014 will be the first time it’s ever taken part.
