An under construction shopping mall has collapsed killing two people and injuring nearly 30 others in South Africa.

The accident happened Tuesday in the town of Tongaat, near the eastern coastal city of Durban, and rescue teams rushed to the scene to help workers who were trapped beneath the rubble.

A police spokeswoman said sniffer dogs are combing the area for survivors. Police say upto 40 people are still trapped under the debris. The rescue work is expected to continue through the night.

According to a local emergency service, 29 people have been taken to hospital in Tongaat with "massive traumatic injuries". It is not yet clear what caused the collapse of the three-storey building.

A senior official said the municipal authorities had obtained a court order a month ago to block construction at the mall.
