Backgrounder: Chang'e-1,Chang'e-2's Journey to the moon

12-02-2013 00:48 BJT Special Report: Chang’e-3 Lunar Probe |

The Chang’e-3 mission is carrying the first Chinese spacecraft that will make a soft-landing on an extraterrestrial object with the aim of exploration. From 2007 to 2013, China’s Chang’e missions have consistently improved technologically and in terms of their goals.

Chang’e-1 started from nothing; but it opened up a new age of deep space exploration for China. Blasting off on October the 24th in 2007 from southwest China’s Xichang Satellite Launch Center, Chang’e-1 entered lunar orbit after 18 days with only one orbital trim required. That is the adjustment required to achieve the desired orbit around an object. On November the 12th, 2008, a hologram of the moon made with data collected by Chang’e-1 was published. It remains the most complete lunar hologram published to date. It hard-landed on the lunar surface on March the 1st, 2009.

Chang’e-2, a pilot probe for Stage II of the lunar program, was launched on October the 1st, 2010 from Xichang. Unlike its predecessor, Chang’e-2 was carried directly into lunar orbit by a Long March-3C rocket. The transfer from the Earth’s orbit to that of the moon was attained in only 112 hours. Chang’e-2 is now 60 million kilometers from Earth and has become the first man-made asteroid from China to enter the solar system. It continues to fly deeper into space and is expected to go as far as 300 million kilometers from Earth before contact with it is lost.

Chang’e-3 will challenge soft-landing on an extraterrestrial object at this time. So far, only the United States and the former Soviet Union have soft-landed on the moon. If successful, China will become the third country to do so.
