Panoramic view of Chang'e-3 soft landing

12-02-2013 00:49 BJT Special Report: Chang’e-3 Lunar Probe |

The Chang’e-3 lunar probe, core to the second phase of China’s Lunar Exploration Program, includes the country’s first lunar rover. It’s also the first spacecraft in 37 years to make a soft landing on the Moon, since the Soviet Union’s Luna 24 mission in 1976. The following report will give you a panoramic demonstration of the Chang’e-3 lunar mission.

After decades of research and preparation, the countdown has begun.

Chang’e-3, named after the goddess of the Moon in Chinese mythology, is to be launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center at 1:30 a.m. on Monday Beijing time.

The lunar probe is composed of a lander and a rover. Sent up by an enhanced Long March-3B carrier, the lunar probe is expected to fly for five days in an Earth-moon transfer orbit, making slight adjustments along the way to adjust its route.

Chang’e-3 then will enter a 100-kilometer lunar orbit after slowing down when approaching the moon.

Four days later, Chang’e-3 will transfer its orbit into an elliptical orbit.

After another four days, Chang’e-3 will go through six stages of deceleration until it’s 15 kilometers away from the moon’s surface.

In order to land quickly and safely, the probe is equipped with high-precision, fast-response sensors to avoid obstacles.

Once the probe has landed, the rover will be deployed to an arranged point to begin work.

Both the rover and the stationary lander will independently conduct scientific research, while a special generator will keep both facilities heated throughout the extremely cold lunar nights....

The lander will work for a year, while the rover is expected to function for three months.
