"Jade Rabbit": China's first lunar rover

12-02-2013 00:57 BJT Special Report: Chang’e-3 Lunar Probe |

China’s first lunar rover, called Yutu, or "Jade Rabbit". Interestingly, the name is inspired by a Chinese fairy tale, in which the goddess Chang’e flew off to the moon taking her little pet Jade rabbit with her.

The six-wheeled rover will be deployed from the lander to explore the moon’s surface. The rover stands 150 centimeters high and weighs approximately 120 kilograms.

It can dig and perform simple analysis of soil samples and has automatic sensors to prevent it from colliding with other objects. Energy will be provided by a solar panel, allowing the rover to operate through lunar days.

The lunar vehicle will carry a radar unit on its underside, allowing for the first direct measurement of the structure of the lunar soil. Tasks for Yutu include surveying the moon’s geological structure and surface substances, while looking for natural resources.
