Friday marks the 76th anniversary of the Nanjing massacre. On December 13th, 1937, Japanese troops killed about 300,000 Chinese civilians and disarmed soldiers, after they captured the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing during World War II.

A series of memorials was held on Thursday and Friday in the city of Nanjing to mark the 76th
anniversary of a massacre that claimed the lives of 30,000 Chinese civilians and disarmed
soldiers.

3,000 candles were lit as part of a vigil held Thursday evening at the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall. Students, monks and activists from China, South Korea and Japan participated in the tribute. It was the first of a series of scheduled activities to commemorate the war victims.

Other events include a prayer for peace assembly, as well as press conferences and seminars. A report on protecting the oral narrations of survivors of the atrocity will also be presented.
