Chandrayaan-2 expected to launch within 2 years

12-15-2013 23:34 BJT Special Report: Chang’e-3 Lunar Probe |

By CCTV correspondent Shweta Bajaj

Now let’s look at China’s neighbor India and the state of its lunar program. The country’s second moon mission has suffered from a series of setbacks due to technical failures. But with changes being made to its rocket, the launch is now expected to take place within the next two years.

Until recently, India’s eyes had been set on Mars. But though the Chandrayaan-2 mission had taken a backseat, it is now back on India’s radar.
The GSLV rocket has had back-to-back failures in the recent past. But it is now ready for another launch on December 15th.

"India’s second moon mission Chandrayaan-2 has faced repeated setbacks because of its second generation rocket launcher: the geo-synchronous satellite launch vehicle. But GSLV is set to be test-fired in a couple of weeks and could pave the way for India’s Chandrayaan-2 mission."

India’s first moon mission Chandrayaan came back with evidence of water on the moon, and for India it’s important to take this to the next level.
Pallava Bagla is a journalist who has reported on India’s space program for decades. he says this time round India’s moon mission will be completely "made in India", just like China’s own mission.

"There is a chance that in the next year or two you may see Chandrayaan-2 being launched by India which is totally an Indian effort. It will have an orbiter, it will have a soft lander, it will have a rover, in a way very similar to what China is attempting in it’s third mission to the moon which is to put an orbiter, a lander and a rover on moon. So these are two nations which are doing very similar things and are doing independently of each other, but both nations doing at a fraction of a cost of what western nations have done." Pallava Bagla, Author, Destination Moon said.

India’s moon mission is an ambitious one, with the next big step being to put a man in space. Other efforts in terms of space exploration are dedicated to remote sensing satellites and communication devices all this a budget that’s just a fraction of that of Western countries.
