UK drone nerve centre unveiled for cameras

12-19-2013 15:43 BJT

Cameras have been allowed inside the UK’s military drone base for the first time ever.

The rare access came as the country’s Defence Secretary defended the use of unmanned aircraft in Afghanistan. The drone nerve centre is located in East England’s Lincolnshire, where pilots use satellite links to fly missions on the other side of the world.

According to the UK’s Ministry of Defence, the aircraft provides surveillance for the British military and strike targets only inside the Afghanistan border. The most controversial of the British drone fleet is the Reaper, which is the only unmanned aircraft that carries weapons.

The UK has acknowledged that these drones have killed civilians when they fired on a convoy in 2011, but insisted the drones are part of the UK’s future military capability.
